Professional Development Hour (PDH) Requirements

Iowa engineers are required to earn 30 PDH biennially, including 2 in the area of professional ethics, every other year ending on December 31 depending on the date of initial license. A maximum of 15 PDH may be carried forward into the next renewal period.

The Board does not approve specific courses or providers. They require the course taken to have “clear purpose and objective which will maintain, improve, or expand the skills and knowledge relevant to the licensee’s field of practice.” Iowa limits online or correspondence courses to a maximum of 10 PDH per renewal period.

Dual License: Dual licensees are required to earn 40 PDH, 20 in engineering and 20 in land surveying. At least 4 of the 40 total PDH must be in the area of professional ethics. The number of PDH that may be carried forward into the next biennium shall not exceed 10 hours for each profession.

Iowa limits online or correspondence courses to a maximum of 10 PDH per renewal period. A maximum of 15 PDH may be carried forward into the next renewal period.
