Illinois Professional Engineer Requirements

Professional Development Hour (PDH) Requirements

Illinois engineers are required to complete 30 PDH by November 30 of odd numbered years.  The state Board does not pre-approve specific continuing education providers or courses.  They do require the courses “contribute to the advancement, extension or enhancement of the professional skills and/or scientific knowledge of the licensee in the practice of professional engineering”.  Hours cannot be carried forward into the next renewal period.

Course Content

The course must "contribute to the advancement, extension or enhancement of the professional skills and/or scientific knowledge of the licensee in practice of professional engineering" and "foster the enhancement of general or specialized practice and values of professional engineering, related sciences and engineering ethics."

Online/Correspondence

For Professional Engineers, there is no limit on the number of PDH’s that can be earned through online/correspondence courses.
For Structural Engineers, no more than 10 hours of the 30 hours required may be earned through online/correspondence courses
