Professional Development Hour (PDH) Requirements

South Dakota engineers are required to complete 30 PDH every other year. The deadline is based on your date of original licensure.  At least 20 PDH must be in “technical subjects that lead to further development in the registrant’s profession”. Specific technical topics include electrical and plumbing systems, construction methods, accessibility, and building codes to name a few.

The state board does not approve continuing education providers or courses. However, the Board allows “successful completion of correspondence, televised, videotaped, audio taped, internet and other short courses or tutorials with verifiable passing scores from examination. Note that all of our courses require completion of an online exam with a passing grade of 70%.

There is no limit to the number of hours that can be completed through online or correspondence courses. A maximum of 15 PDH may be carried forward into the next renewal period.

Online/Correspondence	There is no limit on the number of hours that can be earned through online or correspondence courses.
